Expressing Sympathy with Flowers

sympathy flowersLosing someone that we love and respect is one of the toughest situations life presents us with. Not only do we feel our own sadness, but we are compelled to reach out with comfort. Funeral flowers are one way to provide a meaningful message of sympathy and caring. Like all floral arrangements, specific flowers used for these occasions carry with them traditional meanings that convey heartfelt sentiments.

The bloom that is most often related to memorial services is the lily. While lilies, especially white lilies, express innocence; in this context, the flower represents the innocence now restored to the person’s soul. Stargazer lilies in particular also show sympathy. Lilies are often paired with gladioli in funeral arrangements; the latter growing from two to four feet tall and creating a dramatic backdrop. The gladiolus represents moral integrity and strength of character, and is a fitting tribute to those we love.

Orchids and roses are two additional flowers you may want to consider for memorial services. Red roses signify love and respect; pink roses denote affection and grace; and yellow roses are used for those with whom there were strong, unbreakable ties in life. Orchids, in turn, say “I will always love you”, perhaps the most fitting sentiment of them all.
