The Classic Poinsettia Flower

There is something magical about the Christmas season. The sparkling lights, the traditional songs, the festive decor – this time of year has an ambiance all its own. The poinsettia flower is a popular choice when it comes to decorating both home and office, due to the vivid colors and star-shaped blooms that embody the spirit of the holiday. From hotel lobbies to church sanctuaries, the poinsettia is the official flower of Christmas – and you can trust the experts at Central Square Florist to provide the highest quality plants in Cambridge and Boston.

The Legend of the Poinsettia: The flower is native to Mexico, and it is Mexican folklore which provides the legend behind the classic bloom. It is said that when the Christ child was born, a young girl wished to bring Him an offering. However, she was poor and could not afford a gift. Stooping down by the side of the road, she picked some weeds and wildflowers to bring to the baby. Her gift of love transformed into a beautiful poinsettia plant when placed at the feet of the child.

Did You Know? The brilliantly colored element of the poinsettia is not its flower. In fact, the bright red “petals” are the leaves of the plant, and are known as “bracts”. The small yellow cluster in the center of the bracts is the actual poinsettia flower.

Poinsettias are well-known for their deep red hue, but they also grow in shades of white and pink. They come in a variety of sizes, making them appropriate for spaces ranging from a tabletop to a corporate lobby.
