Thanks to the Flemish botanist Carolus Clusius, these showy flowers have flourished abundantly in that region. After establishing a formal botanical garden at the University of Leiden, he started planting his personal stash of tulip bulbs.

It is believed that the first flowering tulips in The Netherlands commenced in 1594. Clusius discovered these perennials were able to withstand the harsher conditions of the area. They were unlike any other flower that existed in Western Europe. With their petals brilliantly saturated with color, they became extremely popular with the masses.

Legend has it that tulips became a luxury item, and the prices of these beauties began to soar. Everyone wanted a part of this new commodity. They were even used as currency.
