The Quirky History of the 4th of July

4th of July Flowers Boston, MAWe all know that Independence Day marked the birth of our nation. Right from the beginning, our freedom was celebrated with parades, gatherings and fireworks – and of course, the red, white and blue is on proud display everywhere you look. It’s not hard to feel the patriotism and legacy surrounding this day.

But there are some odd facts that surround the holiday that you may not be aware of. John Adams considered July 2, 1776 as the true beginning of our nation. On that day, 54 of the founding fathers reportedly signed the historic document. However, the final 2 signatures were not added until July 4th, giving us our modern date. However, many historians have disputed either date, saying that some of the signers were not even present in Philadelphia until August of 1776. Regardless of the exact date it was signed, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams and Ben Franklin all went to their graves asserting the July signing. In a strange twist, both Thomas Jefferson and John Adams died on July 4th, 1826, on the 50th anniversary of the holiday.
