To honor some of our favorite historical ladies, we at Boston’s premier florist, Central Square, are giving them their appropriate shout out for Women’s History Month, as well as revealing their favorite flowers.

Orchids are ornamental plants coveted by many because of their fragrant and delicately shaped blooms. Symbolizing luxury, strength, and beauty, it is no surprise the orchid flower is loved by this talented actress and mother.
White Peony
Jackie Kennedy Onassis – White Peony and Blue Cornflower
Famous fashion icon as well as First Lady, Jackie Kennedy Onassis had two flowers that were her favorite – white peonies and blue cornflowers. The vibrant blue cornflower is striking in its color and she used it to jazz up the gardens on the White House grounds. The blue cornflower symbolizes hope, devotion, unity, and prosperity, which represented the objectives of that time and is probably why it was one of her favorite flowers. The white peony, a lush, delicate flower with many petals, was Jackie’s other favorite flower and symbolized good luck, prosperity, and abundance.

Anne Hathaway is a versatile and beautiful actress who can take on almost any role. Therefore it’s truly no surprise that the type of flower she favors the most is the mysterious anemone, which comes in an assortment of vibrant colors. A wildflower with delicate petals, the anemone has a variety of different meanings. Red and pink anemones symbolize forsaken love, white anemones symbolize sincerity, and purple anemones offer protection from evil spirits.

The hydrangea flower has different meanings in a different culture, such as apology and understanding in Japan and boastfulness and arrogance in Europe. Regardless of their meaning, the hydrangea is a shrub that produces lush, beautiful flowers in a variety of colors with abundant petals. Katy’s favorite hydrangea colors of purple and white represent understanding, royalty, grace, peace, and purity.

The delicate and glorious white rose is Lady Gaga’s favorite flower. She often wears them as adornments or accessories as well. White roses symbolize pure love, peace, and new beginnings, which is why it has long been a popular flower at weddings. In Greek mythology, the white rose is associated with Adonis, who is responsible for renewal and rebirth. White roses are also connected to focus in life, and having an arrangement of white roses in a vase inside your home means peaceful energy exists throughout your home. Another celebrity singer whose favorite flower is the white rose is Madonna – who has them regularly in her dressing rooms when she performs.
