What started in New Zealand as an idea for spreading simple kindness has become an internationally-recognized opportunity to show compassion in a multitude of ways to everyone around you. Random Acts of Kindness Day is celebrated in the U.S. on February 17th, this day is a chance to spread a little joy to everyone you meet. You may choose to act spontaneously throughout the day or to plan ahead and be intentional. Either way, you can trust that your actions will not go unnoticed. Here are just a few ideas for creative ways you can show a little kindness:
- Leave encouraging notes on windshields in a parking lot, and adorn each with a simple, cheerful daisy. Small notes stating, “Psst- You’re Awesome!” or “Keep Making the World Beautiful!” will leave someone smiling and might even encourage them to pass on the kindness to everyone they meet.
- Shovel snow for an elderly neighbor, or ask if you can grocery shop for a friend who is under the weather. Caring for someone by doing something needed and practical is an act of kindness that will be remembered for a long time.
- Surprise co-workers with a gourmet fruit or goody basket in the break room! Everyone loves a special treat at work- leaving the gift anonymously will make it even more of a random kindness that will encourage others to pay it forward.
